What is the Holy Ghost? and speaking in tongues?

Old testament spoke about the Holy Ghost

Isaiah 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Isaiah 33:19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.

Jesus in the Old testament

Isaiah 11:1-2 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

2. And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

The Holy ghost will give you wisdom

I Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

The Holy ghost will give you understanding

I Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

The holy living Christian will understand
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Because God is holy we should be holy
I Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

I Corinthians 14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

Tongues is not for man to communicate to each other in the carnal, but to talk to God.

I Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Forbid not to speak with tongues, but also keep it speaking tongues decently in order.

I Corinthians 14:39-40 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

John the Baptist was preaching repentance, and warning the people that the messiah is coming and to prepare your life to meet him. This was spoken in the old testament

Isaiah 40:3  The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

The Baptism of Jesus

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Take thought that John the Baptist did not have the Holy Ghost, it was not yet giving.

Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Why do we need the Holy Ghost? (Read I Corinthians Chapter 12:1-10)

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Here is an example of Saul turned to another man through the spirit of God

I Samuel 10:6,10 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

10. And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

Old Testament God spoke concerning the out pour of the spirit of God upon the people, and Jesus spoken of concerning his death on the cross.

Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Supplication: a humble and sincere appeal to somebody who has the power to grant a request (Forgiveness)

Jesus told that when the Holy Ghost the comforter is come unto us. It will speak of him, and the Spirit of truth which is the holy spirit of God it will witness and testify of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In the book of Acts it show here why the holy Ghost is needed for the missionary of God.

Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Do you need the Holy Ghost to be saved? You don't, but seek to receive it you will have a stronger spirit walk with the Lord.

Acts 19:1-6  And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7And all the men were about twelve.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:16,17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

John 15:26-27 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Jesus needed to die for us to receive the Holy Ghost

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

John the Baptist was baptizing with water, but Jesus when he comes will baptize with the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

The spirit of God will be very powerful! Look at the strength that was given to Samson. Never underestimate the power of God!

Judges 15:14,15 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. 15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

How do you know you have the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Acts 2: 1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Greek word for Pentecost is Pentekostos means 50, like fifty days. The disciples waited the 50 days for the comforter to come.

The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

In the latter days people will say that you don't need the Holy Ghost, or say that speaking in tongues is of the Satan.

II Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Speaking in tongues and interrupting

Pray in the spirit and pray in the understanding also

Also begin at chapter 1 of I Corinthian / I Corinthians 14:15,19 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
I Corinthian 14: 20-25 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. 21In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 23If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Delivered By The Lord

The Lord simply has done so much for us, words cannot describe.

Psalms 116:1-9

1I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.2Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.3The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.4Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.5Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.6The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.7Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.8For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.9I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.”

** We are to be thankful everyday, and to make sure that God gets all the praise and glory. He has done the impossible with all of His love for us. **

We were delivered by Jesus Christ through His precious blood.

Deliverance of:

1.   Death

2.   Tears and sorrow

And

3.   Instability

//////////////////////

A. Death

Romans 6:1-7

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin.”

Romans 6:22-23

22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

**God has given a free passage of the way out of darkness and death. He is the key to our salvation and freedom from sin and death. He is the only way to get to heaven. Many have tried over time and many still fight to try another way in but it is impossible, and it always goes back to Jesus. Jesus proved that sin has chained us and leads us to the road of death and tormentation. But He has given another way out, and that was with the price of His life. **

B. Tears and Sorrow

Psalms 34:15-18

“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.16The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.17The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.18The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

** Jesus knows the sufferings of this world; He lived among us at one time. But He proved a solution that would gain us peace without conforming to this wicked world. Through the strength of His Father in Heaven. He gave a simple life manual for us all the live by. 1.) Confession of your sins 2.) Allowing the Lord to lead your life

3.) Abide in Him and Obey His commandments 4.) love and forgive your brethren.  We will truly receive the peace that we need by following these commandments.  And to start it off, he shows compassion unto those with the burdens that they have carried for so long (sins, struggles, life, etc). **

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

** Such wonderful and simple instructions that lead to a happier life, that gives us hope knowing what we will receive in the end. **

Luke 16:19-25

“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.”

C. Instability

**Without Christ , our ways are unstable and we don’t know where we are going. We don’t know whether we are coming or going. But Jesus is the light that we need to be brought out of darkness. He is the one that can give you hope where you need it the most. **

Ephesians 5:8

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:”

John 8:12

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

**Before knowing Jesus Christ, our roads were dark and uneasy. We didn’t know if we were coming or going. Feeling unsafe, unstable and unsure where the road would lead us. At times, sure you felt you were in control of your life, thinking you are the boss of what would come ahead. But not knowing satan was directing your path, leading you to where you would soon be lead to your death in eternal tormentation. But Jesus stepped right in and offered you something that will completely change your life. Giving you an ultimatum, that brings stability, joy, peace, strength and something that no one can give you freely: Salvation- to be freed from sin and darkness. And given the chance to be in true eternal paradise in the end. But remember, He gives you a choice, seeing that we have freewill. Will you make the right decision? As you get up and take Jesus’ hand you will walk upright on solid ground, and the light will be given to you, where before you couldn’t see where you were going, now you have clear vision. Then there are some that think that without Jesus, if they will eventually find another way, a light to the tunnel. Not knowing that deception will take them away forever, where you can't turn back, and not receive a second chance. (The Lord’s return). **

Psalm 119:105

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

**Never step back in the darkness; never step back where you couldn’t see where you were going. Jesus was the Word of God made flesh, and the word is a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our path to lead us where we need to go. In that, we know we are on solid foundation, safe and grounded in the Lord. The Word of God gives us understanding in the ways we need to be grounded to live a successful life with Him. It gives us instructions of what is right and what is wrong. Breaking down all excuses and giving light to all criticisms of the many in this world.**

Matthew 7:24-27

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
