Whatever happened to Love?

By: William F. Hill

'But love is what counts. Love is the greatest,' unfortunately, many who make statements like the above are not aware of what real love is. So many will say that to have all the right standards of holiness and to lack love is a waste. I agree.
1 Corinthians 13:1-7
"1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."
A wise man told several of us young men years ago at our ordination service, "Go ahead and preach that hard message, young man, but make sure you can cry over it first." That sage advice has stood me in good stead at times. If you are like me, you have met those who had outward standards of holiness, but were mean and ugly in their spirit. I can only point back to (2 Corinthians 7:1) and remind all of us that it takes cleansing in both areas, flesh and spirit, to perfect holiness.
 2 Corinthians 7:1
"Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."
External holiness standards without love must as big a disappointment to the earnest seeker as the fig tree without figs was to Jesus.

Mark 11:12-14
"And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: and seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves,  he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for  the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it."
We must state in all fairness, that many who believe in and practice holy living have not had much love shown to them by people who profess much love. Some believers in holiness have had the firmness of their dedication, and their lack of compromise mistaken for an ugly spirit. To all who really stand for holiness, I feel it necessary to exhort that you, above all others, must show love, or the cause of holiness suffers. It is important, however, that we know what love is. Many do not.
John 14:21
"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and  i will love  him, and will manifest myself to him."
John 14:24
"He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me."
We must establish that love is not just some sentimental feeling that brings tears to our eyes or makes us want to hug everybody. Real love can be tested and proven.
1 John 2:3-5
"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, i know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him."
So you see the measurement of love goes far deeper than a sweet, syrupy feeling. A few years ago a defendant at a murder trial was asked by the judge what kind of emotion she had as she was stabbing her victim several times. Her reply was that she felt much love for her. That kind of love I can do without.

1 John 2:15
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."
Here is another test. If we find ourselves attached to this worldly system we live among, we are in danger. We are not to love the amusements of the world. Most churches preached against worldly amusements years ago. Preachers in almost every denomination cried against drinking alcholic beverages, smoking cigarettes, attending to theatre and dance, gambling and sexual sins. Putting Christian words to rock and roll music and calling it Christian rock makes as much sense as putting Bible verses on cigarette packages and calling them "Holy smokes" or making the whiskey bottle in the shape of a cross and labeling it "Holy Spirits". There must be a separation from the evil system of this world if we are to please God and enter into heaven. There is a two-pronged test we can give ourselves to check out our standing with God.
1 John 3:10
"In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."
It is extremely important that we know whether we are children of God or children of the devil. Most professing Christians will look at you with shock and dismay when you make a statement such as i have just made, but we must know where we stand with God, and there must be no doubt. In dealing with thousands of individuals over the years concerning their standing with God, i have received a variety of answers such as: "I think I am saved." "I hope I am saved." "I am trying to be saved, after all, no one can really know until the day of resurrection." I submit to you, that to wait until the day of resurrection to find out whether or not we are saved, is a very risky business at the least. We can know! To those who reply that their salvation and standing with God is sure I always like to ask the question, "On what do you base your answer?" Again, there are a variety of answers offered. "I was baptized when i was a baby", "I joined the church", I sing in the choir", i do good works, i have a good feeling." Let's go back to the Bible way of knowing of the sureness and certainty of our relationship with God.
1 John 2:3-5
""And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, i know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him."

We can readily see by staying true to the scripture that there is a sure and certain way of knowing of our relationship with God and with Jesus Christ. It is not based on feeling, or surmisings, or suppositons. We know that we know God if we do what God tells us to do. Thus we have part one of our two-pronged test to check our relationship with God. Part two involves the latter part of  1 John 3:10....
1 John 4:20,21
"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."
Those who hate people or even are prejudiced against them because of the color of their skin or because they are of another race, nationality or religion need to read above the vcrses and then fall on their knees in repentance. There can be no right relationship with God when we hate our brother.
1 John 2:10,11
"He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. but he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darknes hath blinded his eyes."
So you see we can actually test our relationship to God by using this two pronged test of obeying God, and loving our brother. The amazing thing about this is that they work together. Some who have very high personal standards of holiness are very inadequate in their love. Holiness without love will cause a person to become a very bitter individual. Love, without holiness, will cause a person to be very giddy and shallow. There must be the two of these, holiness and love, together. Love is a test of true holiness. Holiness is a test of true love. We must stay in the scripture and not trust to our emotions, whims and fancies. these will only lead us astray. Talk about a powerful combination! Holiness, coupled together with love, cannot be conquered.

Be ready for the Rapture

It is the height of conceit that we would ever think that we will make ourself ready to be raptured home to Heaven by the simple force of our will. "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23). If we have learned anything about the LORD Jesus Christ, we have learned that "not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us" (Titus 3:5). In other words, we must be trusting in His merit and not any so-called worthiness of our own for salvation, sanctification, and Eternity. "3 For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for Righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the Reward not reckoned of Grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on Him that Justifieth the ungodly, his Faith is counted for Righteousness" (Romans 4:3-5). In sum, our confidence and sufficiency is not in ourselves, but in God. "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God" (2Corinthians 3:5).

Having clearly established that we must presently be living
"by the Faith of the Son of God, Who loved [us], and gave Himself for [us](Galatians 2:20), we can address how to be ready for the Rapture. "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh" (Matthew 24:44). However, in our attempt to properly emphasize the "Grace of God that bringeth Salvation" (Titus 2:11), we have a tendency to discount those Scriptures that make us responsible for our own readiness to meet the LORD Jesus Christ, when He returns for us in the Rapture. "Even so Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone" (James 2:17). It would be a grave mistake to assume that any action that we have taken in the past, will be sufficient by itself to ensure our readiness to be raptured. "Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36). Rather than relying upon any metaphysical formula from men promising that God will grant us the indulgence of our sins that we are committing or will commit-- and, still rapture us home to Heaven-- we ought rather to faithfully declare our absolute necessity of a continuing and practical holiness. "Follow Peace with all men, and Holiness, without which no man shall see the LORD"(Hebrews 12:14).

What must we do to be ready for the Rapture? Our readiness to be raptured is summed up in the declaration, Trust Jesus for all things pertaining to life and to godliness.
"According as His Divine Power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto Life and Godliness, through the Knowledge of Him that hath called us to Glory and Virtue"(2Peter 1:3). Even those Professed Christians who have not yet been taught or understood that there is any such thing as a Rapture-- who do not realize that "we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the LORD in the air" (1Thessalonians 4:17)-- will nonetheless be raptured, if they are at that time trusting Jesus for all things pertaining to life and godliness. "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares" (Luke 21:34). If we needed a lengthy checklist to be assembled by theological divines to determine our readiness, then we will never have enough time to properly determine our condition before the LORD Jesus returns "in the twinkling of an eye" (1Corinthians 15:52). Only an active Faith in the LORD Jesus Christ for everything will find us ready to be raptured. "Have Faith in God" (Mark 11:22).

In practice, we can encourage our Faith-- and, thereby our readiness-- with the following suggestions.

  • First, aim at walking after Christ Jesus perfectly. "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an Example, that ye should follow His steps" (1Peter 2:21). If we do not aim at walking perfectly after the LORD Jesus, then it is assured that we will miss the mark of the "high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14). We must adopt the same standard by which God measures us-- nothing less than perfection of heart intent. "Be ye therefore Perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is Perfect" (Matthew 5:48). No doubt, in the flesh, we would feel much more comfortable tolerating and excusing our failures as unavoidable and defensible; but, in our heart, we would still understand the justice of our LORD's expectation of "perfecting Holiness in the fear of God" (2Corinthians 7:1). And, when we actually "do those things that are pleasing in His sight" (1John 3:22), we should have the presence of mind to lay the credit at the feet of the LORD Jesus, who was at work in us "to will and to do of His Good Pleasure" (Philippians 2:13)"So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do" (Luke 17:10).
  • Second, walk with the Holy Spirit as your Guide. "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God" (Romans 8:14). If we would walk only as fast as we could prayerfully advance, we may not achieve much of what the world thinks we should accomplish in matters of employment, material possessions, esteem, or enjoyment, but we will be able to have the fellowship and guidance of the Spirit of Christ. "Teach me to do Thy Will; for Thou art my God: Thy Spirit is Good; lead me into the Land of Uprightness" (Psalm 143:10). As Christians, we must remember that the greatest gift that God has given to us is His Son, who in turn has given us the gift of "Eternal Life" (Romans 6:23) and the "Gift of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 2:38). Though the manifestations of the Spirit of Christ vary from individual to individual, the main reason for the Spirit's ministry to us is to secure from us a heart of perpetual, loving obedience of the Almighty's commandments, i.e., "And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My Statutes, and ye shall keep My Judgments, and do them" (Ezekiel 36:27).
  • Third, confess your sins to the LORD as soon and as often as it is necessary to keep a "conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men" (Acts 24:16). God's faithfulness is demonstrated every time our backslidden actions have been forgiven, i.e., "If we confess our sins, He is Faithful and Just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1John 1:9). But, that is not to say that we should ever presume to commit sin with the confidence that we will be forgiven, for that would be treating God as if He had granted us the indulgence to sin. "God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" (Romans 6:2). It is quite the contrary with God. He does not hold out any certainty of forgiveness for us, when we "sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the Truth"(Hebrews 10:26). Instead, with Him "there remaineth no more Sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of Judgment and Fiery Indignation, which shall devour the adversaries" (10:27). Only when we have again thrown ourself at His Mercy could we possibly even hope to have the Spirit's Testimony that our backsliddenness has been forgiven. "Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in Mercy" (Micah 7:18).
  • Fourth, commune with the LORD through the Word and prayer, as oft as you can. "7 Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy Presence? 8If I ascend up into Heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in Hell, behold, Thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me" (Psalm 139:7-10). Our ability to think God's Thoughts after Him is directly related to our pursuit of His Living Word. "This Book of the Law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success" (Joshua 1:8). We must sense our need of living "by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4)-- as Jesus did. "Thy Words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy Word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by Thy Name, O LORD God of Hosts" (Jeremiah 15:16). Also, it should rejoice our heart that the Father invites us to continually pray to Him. "Pray without ceasing" (1Thessalonians 5:17). Attempt to pray about everything, for He is actually listening. "6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7)"Rejoice evermore" (1Thessalonians 5:16) in His Goodness towards you and thank Him. "In every thing give thanks: for this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (5:18). Worship Him. "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in Truth" (John 4:24). And especially, petition Him for deliverance from temptation, for we will only find success in overcoming sin, when we receive His Divine Assistance. "Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil" (Luke 11:4).
  • Finally, patiently occupy for the LORD Jesus Christ until He soon returns for us. "Occupy till I come" (Luke 19:13), for He said, "Behold, I come quickly" (Revelation 22:7). Gainful employment is our necessity i.e., "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread" (Genesis 3:19); but, however our God meets our physical needs-- He will-- and, we must cooperatively exert whatever is the necessary labour. "But my God shall supply all your need according to His Riches in Glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). Use the Promises of God to keep your actions directed in the way that will magnify God and sanctify you. "Whereby are given unto us Exceeding Great and Precious Promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust" (2Peter 1:4).
Whatever action you may undertake to fortify the Saints, restore the Backslidden, and win the Lost, is your opportunity to multiply the talents Christ has given you, for He has warned how He will reward or punish us according to our labour. "14 For the Kingdom of Heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. 16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. 17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. 18 But he that had received one went and digged in the Earth, and hid his lord's money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25 and I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the Earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. 26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: 27 thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. 28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 25:14-30).

Why God allows it

   * Why Christians can even rejoice in the midst of trials!

The first reason suggested by this Christian was...]

I. SUFFERING KEEPS THIS WORLD FROM BECOMING TOO ATTRACTIVE

   A. THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT WE ARE "PILGRIMS" AND "SOJOURNERS"...
      1. This world is not truly our home
      2. God has prepared something better for us
      3. Consider the following passages:  1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; He 13:14 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.; 2 Co 5:1,5 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.

   B. IF THERE WAS NO SUFFERING...
      1. No one would want to leave this temporary world
      2. No one would desire the "eternal" home, and therefore prepare
         themselves for it

   C. BUT THE AFFAIRS OF THIS LIFE ARE SO ORDERED...
      1. That the world soon loses its attraction
      2. Most young people may want to live forever...
         a. But by the time a man reaches his "three score and ten"
         b. He begins to desire something better

II. SUFFERING CAN BRING OUT OUR BEST

   A. THE MAN WHOSE WIFE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED SAW THIS...
      1. In the constant support by friends
      2. In the preparation of food
      3. In the financial support

   B. WE SEE THIS OCCURING QUITE FREQUENTLY...
      1. In times of natural disaster
      2. When someone loses a house to fire, tornado, etc.
      3. In times of terminal illness

   C. THIS MAY BE ONE REASON WHY EARLY CHRISTIANS REJOICED IN THEIR
      TRIALS...
      1. They understood that tribulations could develop character
      2. As Paul wrote in Ro 5:3-4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

III. SUFFERING GIVES AN OCCASION TO SILENCE THE ENEMIES OF GOD

   A. REMEMBER THE STORY OF JOB?
      1. Satan wanted to prove God wrong about Job, that he served God
only because God had blessed him
      2. But Job's patience under suffering silenced Satan!

   B. LIKEWISE, GOD DESIRES THAT WE SILENCE "FOOLISH MEN" - 1Pe 2:15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
      1. Who ridicule the teachings of Christ as foolishness
      2. Who say we are Christians only for what good we can get out of
         it

   C. BY PATIENTLY ENDURING, OR DOING GOOD IN TIMES OF SUFFERING...
      1. The value of being Christians really shines through
      2. In the faith we have that sustains us in suffering, and in the
love we show towards those who suffer

IV. SUFFERING MAKES US APPRECIATIVE

   A. WE ALL RECEIVE SO MANY GOOD THINGS IN THIS LIFE...
      1. It is easy for us to become prone to take them for granted
      2. Instead of receiving them with gratitude toward God

   B. SUFFERING CAN HELP US APPRECIATE MORE FULLY...
      1. Good health
      2. Good friends, and a loving family
      3. A good example of how suffering can make one appreciative is the
apostle Paul when he was in prison - cf.

V. SUFFERING MAKES US MORE DEPENDENT UPON GOD

   A. TOO OFTEN, WE THINK OURSELVES SELF-SUFFICIENT...
      1. "But when a dozen of the most skilled men in their profession
tell you they have done all they can and it is completely out
         of their hands..."
      2. "...you suddenly realize how much you depend on God."

   B. AT NO OTHER TIME...
      1. Is one more likely to realize that we depend upon God for our
         very breath!
      2. As Paul proclaimed:  "in Him we live and move and have our
being" - Ac 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

VI. SUFFERING HELPS PURIFY US

   A. CONSIDER THE IMPORT OF TWO PASSAGES...
      1. 1Pe 1:6-7 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: - Suffering can be like fire purifying gold
      2. Jm 1:2-5 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
- Maturity can be developed through trials

   B. TO ILLUSTRATE HOW, CONSIDER THE MAN WHOSE WIFE WAS INJURED...
      1. "Many times I searched my own life during these past six weeks
in order to confess my every failure and shortcoming to God..."
      2. "I surely did not want my own sins to stand in the way of God
         hearing my prayers for Jane..."
      3. "It was absolutely necessary to be truthful with God and myself,
and I am a better man today than before."

VII. SUFFERING MAKES US SYMPATHETIC

   A. PAUL WROTE OF THIS VALUE OF AFFLICTION...
      1. To the church at Corinth, in his second epistle - 2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
      2. It helps us to be better able to comfort others in their
         affliction

   B. WE MAY THINK WE CAN SYMPATHIZE WITH SOMEONE...
      1. But until we have been there personally, there is no true
         understanding of their hurt
      2. Experiencing suffering...
         a. Makes us more likely to "weep with those who weep" - Ro
12:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
         b. Better enables us to serve others

VIII. SUFFERING TEACHES US HOW TO PRAY

   A. WE ALL MAY BE A PRAYING PEOPLE...
      1. We pray at the right times
      2. We pray for the right things

   B. BUT IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING WE LEARN HOW TO PRAY...
      1. "Earnestly"
      2. "Perseveringly"
      3. "With groanings which cannot be uttered" (Ro 8:26) 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
